In the twenty second century, the mega corporation BuynLarge (BnL) took hold of every economic service on Earth including government. Ove rrun by un recycled waste, earth eventually became so polluted that it could no longer support human life. In an bid to keep humanity going, BnL CEO Shelby Forthright sponsored a five year exodus to outer space aboard executive starliners, including Axiom, which left the planet in 2105. These star liners were giant space cruise ships that supported every need for the humans with a fully automated robotic crew. 100's of thousands of robots, known as "WALL-E", were left behind to clean up the planet by compacting the rubbish into cubes and stacking them into sky scraper like towers for disposal. But this plan was rejected when Forthright determined in 2110 that the Earth was far too toxic for return to ever be viable. By 2805, 700 years later, only 1 WALL-E remained operational.
Centuries of prolonged activation had caused WALL-E to become sentient. He collects up items that he finds among the rubbish including spare parts for himself from other inactive WALL E units and saves a seedling plant which he plants in an old boot. He frequently watches a video of the 1969 musical film Hello, Dolly teaching himself emotion and emphasizing the act of holding hands.
One day, he encounters EVE, a female probe sent from the Axiom whose directive is to find plant life and falls in love with her upon first sight. She does not reciprocate his feelings because her only concern is her directive, though she does express fascination & amusement in his personality. When he shows her the plant he has she stores it inside herself and deactivates. WALL E goes to a lot of trouble to protect her motionless body until she is retrieved by the ship that delivered her. Distraught, WALL-E holds onto to the outer hull as it goes into the depths of space eventually arriving on board the Axiom.
After centuries of living in microgravity, the people on the Axiom have lost a lot of bone & muscle mass, making them too obese and weak to stand or move without the robots assistance. Every task is now completly automated including piloting the ship, which is handled by the autopilot called "Auto". Aboard the Axiom, WALL-E follows EVE to her destination. His behavior causes both humans & robots to act outside their normal routines. In particular WALL-E causes a cleaning robot named M-O to stop his designated duties in order to clean the tracks of dirt WALL-E leaves behind, and inadvertently wakens two humans, John & Mary to the world around them.
EVE tries to give the plant to the Axiom's Captain, but finds it's missing and assumes WALL-E took it. Auto tells Captain McCrea that EVE must have malfunctioned so she is sent to the robot repair ward with WALL-E to be cleaned. Mistakenly thinking that the diagnostic machine is trying to hurt EVE, WALL-E takes her cannon arm and frees all the malfunctioning robots by accidentally shooting the power source of the robotic arms that run the repair ward. Annoyed, EVE tries to send WALL-E back to Earth in an escape pod, but WALL-E refuses to leave without her. Auto's assistant GO-4 then arrives and deposits the missing plant in the pod showing himself as the true thief. As WALL-E goes to get the plant for EVE, GO-4 launches the pod with the self destruction active. WALL-E manages to put the plant in his rubbish compactor before the pod blows up and escapes. EVE is so happy & relieved that both WALL-E and the plant are safe that she gives WALL-E a kiss an electro static discharge between the 2 and they dance around the shi, flying together through space.
EVE returns the plant to the Captain who shows her the lengths to which WALL-E went to protect her while she was deactivated and she begins to fall in love with him. Captain McCrea is enthralled by earlier images depicting life as it was before the rise of BnL, and is shocked by the environmental devastation on Earth depicted in EVE's recordings. He decides that humanity must return to Earth to make amends. However, Auto insists that they cannot return to Earth, and is forced to reveal that Shelby Forthright ordered the autopilots never to do so, having deemed the planet too toxic to ever support life again. Unable to disobey the order, Auto stages a mutiny, locking McCrea in his quarters, and tries to dispose of the plant. When WALL-E takes the plant from him and refuses to relinquish it, Auto shocks him and temporarily deactivates EVE, throwing them both into a rubbish chute along with the plant.
Having arrived on Earth, EVE repairs WALL-E with his spare parts and successfully reactivates him. But the extent of the damage seems to have wiped his memory &personality, he begins crushing his favourite collectibles into cubes, following his original motive. As a farewell gesture she takes hold of his hand and hums the song It Only Takes a Moment and kisses him again. The resulting spark reboots WALL-E's memory, and he suddenly recognizes her as they join hands.
